The Ministry of Transport is pleased to announce a number of improvements aimed at increasing the safety of pedestrians.

The first is the installation of a new light-controlled pedestrian crossing on Line Wall Road, adjacent to the Youth Centre, aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety along one of Gibraltar’s busiest thoroughfares.

This new crossing has been strategically introduced following stakeholder engagement and public feedback, particularly in response to the increased footfall generated by nearby facilities, including the GEMA Art Gallery, a nursery, and the Youth Centre. This location has seen a consistent rise in pedestrian movement, making the provision of a safe and controlled crossing point both necessary and timely.

In addition to the crossing, new planters have been installed in the area. These not only improve the visual appeal of the streetscape but also serve as a traffic calming measure, creating a natural narrowing effect that encourages motorists to reduce speed when approaching the crossing.

Keightley Way Tunnel Improvements

Separately to this new pedestrian crossing, a range of road safety and awareness measures have recently been introduced across Gibraltar. These include the installation of new demarcation bollards at the Keightley Way Tunnel, which enhances visibility for vehicles entering the tunnel and contributes to improved overall road safety for both motorists and pedestrians.

New School Zone Road Markings

Furthermore, new road markings are currently being implemented outside all public and private schools, with the words “School Zone” clearly demarcated on approach roads. These markings are designed to increase driver awareness, encourage reduced speeds when approaching school areas, and reinforce the need for heightened caution, thereby improving safety for both pupils and other pedestrians.

This initiative forms part of the Government’s wider programme to enhance road safety and promote sustainable modes of transport, particularly walking. It aligns with the objectives outlined in both the Active Travel Strategy and the Sustainable Traffic, Transport and Parking Plan (STTPP), reinforcing the commitment to creating a safer, more accessible, and pedestrian-friendly urban environment.

By improving pedestrian infrastructure in key locations, the Government also continues to support healthier, more active lifestyles, while ensuring that Gibraltar’s road network evolves to meet the needs of residents and visitors alike.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution when travelling along Line Wall Road, to remain alert to the new crossing, and to comply fully with traffic signals and pedestrian priority at all times.

Minister for Transport, the Hon John Cortes, said: “The installation of this new pedestrian crossing demonstrates our ongoing commitment to enhancing safety across Gibraltar’s road network. Line Wall Road is a heavily used corridor, and with increasing pedestrian activity linked to nearby facilities, it is important that we provide safe, clearly defined crossing points. This intervention responds directly to community needs while supporting a more efficient, modern, and pedestrianfocused transport system.

"In parallel, we are implementing a range of additional road safety and awareness measures across Gibraltar, including school road markings at key locations. These targeted interventions are practical but effective steps that encourage safer driving behavior and contribute to reducing overall risk on our roads.

"Our work continues to be guided by the principles of the Active Travel Strategy and the Sustainable Traffic, Transport and Parking Plan. We remain committed to delivering a transport network that prioritises safety, improves accessibility, and encourages walking where appropriate, while ensuring it continues to meet the demands of a growing and active community."
