At the end of this year's Mental Health Awareness Week, the Gibraltar Mental Welfare Society have offered some comments on how it sees the situation at the moment. At a public meeting held on the 3rd April, a number of issues were raised by relatives of service users, and others.

Gibraltar Cultural Services have announced the return of BookCrossing Day on Saturday 3rd June 2017 at the Cathedral of St Mary the Crowned, Main Street, between 11am and 2pm.
As is well known, Western Beach consistently had excellent bacterial water quality prior to 2010. Since then, and especially during periods of rainfall in the winter months, there have been erratic episodes associated with sewage discharges from a storm water drain from La Linea which significantly affected the bacterial water quality at this beach. Nevertheless, it was possible to open Western Beach last summer since bathing water quality was acceptable from an EU perspective during this period.
The Government of Gibraltar, together with the Bar Council, issued a consultation paper on a draft Legal Services Bill in the summer of 2016. The Government intends to publish a revised draft of that Bill shortly in order that it may be taken before Parliament.

Clubhouse Gibraltar has successfully secured the licence to run Mental Health First Aid courses in Gibraltar. Two Clubhouse staff members have qualified as trainers in Mental Health 1st Aid after attending a course in UK .The Mental Health First Aid course is an internationally recognised course, established in Australia.

Government, together with the Chamber of Commerce and the Gibraltar Federation of Small Businesses, will host a breakfast for its members where a guest speaker will give a talk on disability awareness and its importance to businesses.

In a hearing held on Tuesday 16 May 2017, the Court of Justice of the European Union heard submissions from the Gibraltar Government and the Gibraltar Target Shooting Association on the question of whether the EU Directive establishing a European Firearms Pass ought to be implemented in Gibraltar, in Case C-267/16.

The Gibraltar Museum will be opening its doors for their 16th annual Open Day on Saturday 20th May, 2017, from 10:00 to 18:00 hours. As in other years the open day is aimed to coincide as closely as possible with International Museum Day (18th May). This year’s international theme is “Museums and contested histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums”.

In a statement released today, the Government said it was "informed at noon today, by a senior Director from the United Kingdom, of the decision by the Newcastle Building Society to close their branch in Gibraltar following what they say was an 18 month review. HM GOG regrets the news that Newcastle has, following a strategic review, closed a number of branches, including Gibraltar."

Urban Dance will be performing ' I Love Dance' as part of their annual production, this Friday 19th May at the John Mackintosh Hall. Many people mistakenly believe that the two are one and the same thing, others may be struggling with a mental health issue and not know whether to turn to a psychologist or a psychiatrist. In this article I hope to not only help clarify the distinction, but also express the importance in understanding that distinction if and when you or someone you know feels they need mental health support.

It is an interesting facet of humans that, while we seem to draw a clear distinction between those with mental health conditions and those without, and personally identify as either one or the other, we also often hear of symptoms associated to specific mental health conditions and say “oh, I do that” even despite endeavouring to personally disassociate from the “crazy”. Does this tell us that we are all actually mad? Does it tell us that while people do not want to identify with a specific label, they are comfortable identifying with symptoms?
