Cigarette seizure by HM Customs – Spanish national arrested
A Spanish national has been arrested by Customs after he was stopped whilst
driving a Spanish registered vehicle on Queensway in the early hours of the
morning. On searching the vehicle, 9,000 cigarettes (45 cartons) were found within
an adapted concealment in the car. The cigarettes and vehicle have been seized
and the man has been released on bail.
In a separate incident, Customs intercepted two men acting suspiciously at the
frontier fence on British Lines Rd. The men, Spanish nationals, had been seen
riding a motorcycle into the Customs-controlled area and were questioned over
possible offences against the Imports and Exports Act. Spanish National Police
officers, directed by Customs, retrieved two plastic bags containing cigarettes from
the waste-ground on the Spanish side of the Frontier fence during the incident.
Enquiries are ongoing.
